My Connections Hunger Games III

My Connections.

The book I am currently reading is called The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay Book III.  It is the last book of the trilogy and, like the one I read before, is very addictive. As I said in my previous connections on The Hunger Games is one of those books that will keep you under the covers at night with a flashlight. This book has many unexpected turns and is exhilarating to read. Reading it makes me feel terrified, interested and scared at the same time. I always want to finish the chapter I am reading because there is always a freaky twist towards the end. On the one hand I want to finish the book quickly so that I can find out what happens in the end. Yet at the same time I am worried that I will finish this book too quickly. I don’t want to finish the book quickly because it is the last book of 3 and I have really enjoyed reading the Hunger Games books. I will miss listening to my heart beat at the end of each chapter inhaling all of the stories excitement.Although the book is meant to be serious and has constant suspense it has a touch of ironic humor. Such as the quote ‘After we stretch – which hurt - there’s a couple of hours of strengthening  exercises – which hurt – and an eight kilometer run – which kills.’  I think that most books are thought out well but in The Hunger Games case it is thought out excellently. I heard there is a movie that will be based on the stories. I am both excited and scared thinking about it – since there would be many killing scenes -- since the first book is based on killing the other opponents.

Connections The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games
This story is set in the future. North America is divided into 13 districts with the capitol being in charge. The capitol is cruel and heartless. Each year, the capitol forces one boy and one girl from each district -- between the ages 12 and 18 -- to go to ‘the hunger games.’
The chosen kids are sent off to survive in landscapes that range from deserts to snowy mountains.  These landscapes are referred to as ‘the arena.’ Players need to survive in this treacherous place and kill their opponents. The last survivor wins fame, fortune and most importantly, food for their district.

The main character in this story is Katnis, a sixteen year old girl living in Panem district 12 to be exact or as known in the past North America.
It is one of the best books I have ever read. It is filled with suspense, emotion and rising action. In one part of the story, the main character grows very close to a character named Rue. When someone dies during these games a cannon shoots so that the players know who is out of the game.  While reading the book, the simplest phrase such as “Rues cannon fired” stirs strong emotion in the reader (I wanted to cry). Normally you would just be like ‘so what?’ You really need to get into the story to understand how emotional that sentence is. You know that the main character has just experienced a very deep loss when you read this sentence.

I don’t think I would survive the hunger games for long. I can’t hunt, hide or run. I would starve and even if I had the chance to kill one of my opponents I would not have the guts. I really hope this will not happen in the future because it would be very bad. One decent meal would cost more than a refrigerator. Many people think the future will be better but you never know if you will end up in something like ‘The Hunger Games.

This is one of those books that once you have finally finished every book you want to make up your own book with the same characters and plot. Maybe I will do that maybe I will be the next Suzanne Collins.

My Connections

The book I am currently reading is called
Report to the Principal's Office by Jerry Spinelli.

I like that in this book the principal is actually very jolly and happy. When a kid is sent to the principal’s office they have lunch with the principal instead of being shouted at -- which is what any other principal would do.

I relate to Salem {one of the main characters} the most because she is a writer just like me. Also because she talks a lot and is not that shy. I think she is a ‘different’ character that I have never seen before in another book. She reminds me of myself last year when I was in sixth grade.

I would recommend this book to a friend because it is a comedy book that will make you laugh. Up to where I have read I would give it an 8/10.
Mostly because I am a fan of books with humor. It also has some gross humor.  Like when Sunny Wyler flicks a booger at Eddie. These are some things that would gross you out if they happened to you but would probably make you laugh if you saw them happen to someone else (or maybe not).

My favorite quote in the book is probably when Salem says to an eighth grader: " I wouldn’t give you a carbuncle off my nose, if I had a carbuncle." I don't know what a carbuncle is and neither does anyone I know...but I think the word is funny.

Perspectives

Year of the Dog by Grace Lin

The year of the dog is in first person. You can see that because the main character Pacy is sharing her and only her feelings. She is the narrorator. You can also tell the book is in  first person with lines like 'I through myself on the bed.' As you can see she used I and myself. But because in the book there are plenty of characters there is a part where Pacy's mom is telling the story which is confusing. There is also a lot of dialogue which can confuse you as well. Pacy shows most of her feelings when she is at school, at a red egg party and at a Taiwanese camp. She feels anger, embaresment, fear and joy in most of the story. I enjoy this book because it is in her perspective it gives more emotion and feeling to the story.
